Case Presentation #3 by Dr. Gary Opin Summary by: Dr. Bob Staley Dr. Opin described the diagnosis and treatment of an adult male who presented with a mandibular asymmetry caused by an osteochondroma of the right mandibular condyle. The patient had two previous surgical-orthodontic treatments by other practitioners in which the tumor was surgically reduced in size to correct the asymmetry. Continued growth of the tumor brought the patient to Dr. Opin. Models of the maxilla and mandible were produced from CAT scans to study the extent of the tumor and plan for surgical-orthodontic treatment. The tumor was surgically removed through an extra-oral incision and a rib from the patient was grafted to the mandible to create a new condyle. Treatment time was 14 months for this interesting and difficult malocclusion problem. |
